The restoration of the fountain at the junction of the Albion and Quarry Roads has won a Conservation Commendation in this year’s Royal Tunbridge Wells Civic Society annual Conservation and Shopfront Awards.

The Gower Fountain in Tunbridge Wells

Having been presented to the Corporation on Tunbridge Wells in 1896 by Alderman Joshua Robert Gower, the fountain has built up historic interest over the years from local residents and organisations, and it was thought that it was high time it was given some much needed tlc!
It had been marked as one of the towns ‘Grot spots’ thanks to its deteriorating condition, and received a much needed restoration earlier this year, thanks to a partnership between the council, the Royal Tunbridge Wells Civic society and nearby businesses.

It was this extensive restoration that earned the Conservation Commendation certificate, which was presented to members of the council by local MP Greg Clark on Thursday.
Portfolio holder for planning and development Cllr Elizabeth Thomas said: ‘The Conservation Commendation that has been awarded is an indication of the value that has been added by restoring the Gower Fountain. The award highlights what a delight it is for local people to be able to now see and appreciate the fountain in its former glory.'
