Certificates were presented to:
Lewis Lowdell, a 14 year old member of the public, who saw a toddler wandering in the middle of the main road near Tatler Close, Chatham in July 2010. The 18 month old boy had managed to get out of the house unknown to his mother. Lewis’ quick thinking and intervention in taking hold of the child ensured the toddler’s safety. Had it not been for Lewis’ action the outcome could have been very different.
PCSO Peter Cunnington (Tonbridge*) and colleague PCSO Linda Baker (Tonbridge) responded to a call when a teenage boy fell into the river in Tonbridge in February 2010. Their actions ensured the youngster, who had been playing on the lock with friends, was pulled to safety.
PC Steven Reynolds (Cranbrook) and PC Mark Hickson (Cranbrook) were commended for their actions during a pursuit of a car which was believed to have been involved in a burglary. At one point the suspect vehicle drove into the police car, despite this the officers challenged one of the offenders who was believed to be in possession of a weapon. It later transpired that the car was involved in a burglary at a business premises in Paddock Wood.
Chief Inspector Jon Kirby (Tonbridge) was recognised for his role as Event Commander during the July 2010 Hop Farm Music Festival.
PC David Cunnington (Tunbridge Wells) was commended for his action in responding to a call in September 2010 where a young woman was balanced on the edge of the top floor of a multi-storey car park in Tunbridge Wells. His calm and patient approach ensured a safe ending to a dramatic story.
Det Con Richard Higham (West Kent) was the investigating officer for a series of complex frauds which targeted bank cash point machines. His work led to arrests being made and convictions secured in court. In sentencing the offenders Judge Statman commended DC Higham for his work.
Det Con Paul Walker (West Kent) received his award for managing a serious and complex investigation into a conspiracy to commit distraction burglaries and fraud against elderly and vulnerable members of the community. The investigation crossed four counties. The offenders were sentenced to a total of 32 years in prison.
Ins Robert Slade’s (Sevenoaks) award was for his continued high standard of work in supporting three district Chief Inspectors in the Sevenoaks district. His work has been key to the sustained crime reduction achieved in the district. Recently he completed an attachment to HMIC when he was commended for his comprehensive work.
Sgt Mary Penfold initiated an operation tackling anti-social behaviour relating to crime and disorder in the Tonbridge and Malling district. She led the operation in a professional way which reflected her already distinguished service with Kent Police. Sgt Penfold retired in September.
PC Richard Hall (Tonbridge) was recognised for his exceptional high level of performance and pro-active policing approach, particularly during the period between January 2009 – October 2010 where he recorded over 170 arrests, above the average for the county.
PC Nova O’Leary (West Kent) was commended for the work she has undertaken in the past six years as a Community Liaison Officer. She has worked closely with minority communities, building confidence and bringing credibility to a role that requires understanding and sensitivity of the many issues involved.
Tracy Nicholls (West Kent) received an award for her dedication as a technical officer in West Kent. She was commended for her professionalism.
Members of the Sevenoaks District Community Safety Unit: Lesley Bowles, Kelly Webb, Maxine Quinton, Cara Sillett, Suzanne Daniell, PCSO Chantelle Trante, PCSO Dennis Glasspool, PC Nova O’Leary, PC Andy Blackmore, PC Alan Hibbins, Sgt John Crozier and Ins Robert Slade, are commended for their commitment in ensuring the success of the Community Safety Unit. The team has developed a strong working relationship in order to deliver a seamless response to crime and anti-social behaviour.
Awards were also made to three people who were nominated by their colleagues for the contribution they have made to West Kent, namely PCSO Lisanne Fry (Sevenoaks), Mr Patrick Beale (Tonbridge) and PC Phil Smith (Tunbridge Wells).
PC Jackie Allen (West Kent) was presented with a certificate to recognise her achievement in gaining a qualification in Dementia Awareness. PC Allen works in the public protection unit and specialises in adult protection.
