Former Indian captain kapil dev revisits the nevill ground in tunbridge wells
Kent

Picture the scene, it is the summer of 1983 and the Cricket World Cup is being played in England, nothing unusual in that but what was unusual, in fact unique was one of the matches was to be played at the Nevill Ground in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

The match was a group B game between India and Zimbabwe and history was about to be made.

The Indian innings had started disastrously with the Indian's reduced to 17 for 5 when their captain Kapil Dev came to the wicket, what followed is part of Indian cricket folklore, and was the reason for Kapil's return to the ground yesterday (Wednesday 26th June).

The then Captain went on to produce an innings of 175 which gave India the chance to attack the Zimbabwean batsmen, and lead to a famous victory.

The innings which is still talked about in India today gave the Indian team such a lift that it is considered the event which lead to them lifting the World Cup later that summer.

Kapil clearly felt emotional at returning to the scene of possibly his greatest triumph, 'It is fantastic to be back, looking at the ground now it doesn't look that big, but at that time, when the team was struggling it seemed very big! But of course once you start playing well everything looks small.'

Amazingly the people of Tunbridge Wells seemed less than excited about the prospect of seeing a World Cup match, 'There were not many people here when I begun my innings, later in the day people started coming in. Lots of people came into the ground with chairs and relaxed.'

One person who was at the match was Nigel Bolton, the head of leisure services at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council. Mr Bolton was at the ground yesterday to welcome Kapil on behalf of the council.

Recalling the famous day Mr Bolton said, ' I was at the ground that day, it was a fantastic match. I was very young at the time and I remember him knocking them all over the place.' Commenting on the fact that the Nevill Ground was lucky enough to host such a famous game Mr Bolton said, 'It made the Nevill Ground World famous at the time, and people still talk about it to this day.'

Looking out over the beautiful ground it is wonderful to imagine the scenes of 25 years ago and to think of the place that this ground in Tunbridge Wells holds in the heart of both Kapil Dev himself and the millions of Indain cricket fans around the World.
