Once again the centre of Tunbridge Wells played host to the now annual Mela on Sunday (20th July). The celebration now in its third year was held on The Calverley Grounds and was a fantastic success.

The weather was just right and this helped to boost the crowd throughout the day.

The Mela is intended to bring together the different communities of Tunbridge Wells and there is no doubt that this was acheived at the event.

The crowd was made up of as diverse a group of people as you could wish for, and the large numbers of families present lead to a fantasticly friendly atmosphere.

The event was organised by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council with the support of West Kent Police, the North West Kent Racial Equality Council, and Town & Country Housing.

As well as music and dance on the stage there were a wide range of stalls offering food from the Indian Sub-Continent and crafts and gifts from around the world.

The Mayor of Tunbridge Wells, Councilor Mike Rusbridge was very pleased with the day, 'It has been a fabulous day, Calverley Grounds is a natural amphitheatre and today has helped to dispell the myth that Tunbridge Wells is just white and middle class, there is in fact such diversity of cultures in the town.'

Guvindar Sandher, the Assistant Director of North West Kent Racial Equality Council echoed the Mayor's comments, ' I am really pleased with the day. It is great to see everyone come together like this, and it is particuarly pleasing to see so many families here.'

The mela was designed to celebrate the diversity of the Tunbridge Wells area and to offer people a fun day out and there can be little doubt that this aim was acheived.
