Tunbridge Wells Mayor supports shades for a day

The mayor of Tunbridge Wells, Councillor Mike Rusbridge wore dark glasses for a day to highlight the difficulties blind and partially sighted people have getting around the town.

The Mayor was showing his support for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association’s national campaign to raise awareness of eye health and to raise funds for research into the causes and prevention of sight loss.

Mrs Enid Aves and her dog King were invited to the town hall to have tea with the mayor and to discuss the problems faced by blind and partially sighted people.

Councillor Rusbridge was very keen to support the aims of the day and said, 'I hope the day will make people aware of the problems people can have when they are blind or partially sighted. I have suffered from some eye problems, so I understand how precious sight is.'

Mrs Enid Aves who is blind was at the town hall with her guide dog, King and while enjoying a cup of tea with the Mayor spoke to me about the difference having a guide dog makes to her life, ' The bottom line is it (having a guide dog) gives you the confidence to do things, you can go where you want to, how you want to and when you want to.'
