Ambitious plans to revitalise Royal Tunbridge Wells, Paddock Wood, Cranbrook and Southborough have taken a major step forward with the selection of the preferred developer.

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has enlisted the help of investor and developer John Laing plc and developer Gladedale to create a detailed masterplan to develop four town centres within the borough.

The plans, which will be the subject of a major public consultation, are likely to involve the creation of new offices, retail space and new homes. A key aim will be to preserve and enhance the unique character and historic setting of the towns by sensitive development which maximises the potential of each of the four centres.

It’s anticipated by John Laing and Gladedale that the redevelopment will create significant employment opportunities and generate substantial investment in the West Kent towns over the next 10 years.

The selection of John Laing-Gladedale from a shortlist of six developers follows the preparation of a brief by the Council aimed at boosting the local economy by enhancing the four town centres as places to live, work, shop and visit.

The 10-year development programme is aimed at revitalising the four centres and establishing the Borough of Tunbridge Wells as a major regional destination.

Cllr Roy Bullock, Leader of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council said: ‘We have been delighted with the quality of the submissions. Overall John Laing-Gladedale provided the best interpretation of the brief and responded well to all elements. We were encouraged by the attention they gave to all four town centres. Although the detail of the deal is yet to be finalised, we look forward to working in partnership with John Laing-Gladedale for the benefit of the residents and visitors of the Borough of Tunbridge Wells.’

Stuart Yeatman, Property Director for John Laing Projects and Developments, said: ‘This innovative development project will improve the lives of people living and working in and around Tunbridge Wells, but also provides the template for other councils looking for innovative ways to finance and deliver extensive town centre schemes. We are delighted to be selected as preferred developer and look forward to working with the Council in the coming months to make the new vision of Tunbridge Wells a reality.’

Paul Lemar, Land and Planning Director at Gladedale Special Projects, said: ‘This is an exciting opportunity to confirm Royal Tunbridge Wells as a major regional destination and enrich the surrounding towns of Southborough, Cranbrook and Paddock Wood. Gladedale and John Laing will work closely with the Council to bring forward dynamic masterplans for each of the centres with the aim of creating new offices, shops, amenities and public spaces which will revitalise the towns and attract significant investment.

‘This is the start of a conversation with people and key organisations in Royal Tunbridge Wells to ensure that the final masterplan fully reflects the aspirations of the community.’

To ensure effective working with the Council, John Laing-Gladedale will establish a local office in Tunbridge Wells.
