Cert TBC, 112 mins, Dir: Julian Schnabel, France/USA 2007
£7 (£5.50)

On December 8 1995 at the age of 43, Jean-Dominique Bauby, inventive and charismatic editor in chief of the French magazine Elle, suffered a massive stroke.

After lapsing into a coma for twenty days he awoke to find himself the victim of locked-in syndrome, mentally alert but a prisoner inside his own body, his only means of communicating with the outside world the blinking of his left eye.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Forced to adjust to this unique perspective, he was taught an alphabet: a code in the order of the most frequently used letters in the French alphabet.

This alphabet unlocked the prison of Jean-Dominique’s body, which he called his Diving Bell, and traveled the borderless regions of freedom that he called The Butterfly.

In French with English subtitles.

COMEDY CAFÉ
Thu 17 April 2007
(£13.50) (£11.50)

Another great night of stand up is promised at Trinity’s Comedy Café this week. Three comedians, all very different…
John Moloney has been a professional entertainer for the past decade. Blessed with a rapier-like wit and superb delivery of the acid drenched one-liner, in 10 years at the top he has honed his act into one of the must-see routines in the business. Winner of the Best Live Performer Award for two years running at the London Comedy Festival, his mix of comedy and music has made him one of the most in-demand acts at home and abroad. Olivier Award winner for his work on the Jack Dee Show, he was also nominated for Best Live Stand-Up at the British Comedy Awards.

John Moloney at the Trinity Theatre Tunbridge Wells

John will be familiar to many as a regular presenter on Richard and Judy (Ch4) and a guest on such diverse offerings as Des and Mel (ITV), They Think It's All Over (BBC1), Have I Got News For You (BBC2) and Never Mind The Buzzcocks (BBC2’s).

Comedian, impressionist, writer and actor Geoff Norcott has made a real impact on the UK comedy scene since he first took to the stage in 2001. His abundance of rhythm and energy coupled with a storming mix of impressions, observations, satire and rap, make him one of the original performers on the circuit. Equally at home on the screen, he has worked on Celebrity Fame Academy, and also appeared on the marvelously titled Before and After They Were Mingers series. as well as Dan and Dusty and Weapons of Mass Distraction. All wrapped up with faultless delivery, affability and a t-shirt two sizes too small, who could ask for anything more.

Intelligent, witty and sardonic, Ron Vaudry is the thinking man’s comedian. A satirical genius teetering precariously at the edge of comedy, Vaudry guides audiences through a series of hilarious, yet thought provoking political and social observations. A favourite at Edinburgh Fringe and the Just for Laughs International Comedy Festival in Montreal, Ron has parlayed success into headlining appearances at major comedy clubs on several continents.

GEORGIE FAME AND SONS – IMAGE WILL FOLLOW UNDER SEPARATE COVER.
Thu 24 Apr 8pm
£20 (£18)

With over twenty albums and fourteen hit singles, including the Number 1’s: Yeh Yeh, Getaway and The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde, Georgie Fame’s popularity continues to go from strength to strength. Add to this a long list of collaborations with some of music’s most famous names: Muddy Waters, Gene Vincent, Bill Wyman, Eric Clapton and Van Morrison, amongst many others, and in Georgie Fame you have bona fide Musical Legend!

From 1970 to 1973 Fame worked almost exclusively in a memorable partnership forged with fellow musician Alan Price. The duo featured in their own television series “The Price of Fame”, guested on countless others, and produced the hit single ‘Rosetta’.

In 1974 Georgie reformed The Blues Flames and they continue working with him to this day.
Georgie performs regularly with Europe and America’s finest groups and big bands, where he has made many friends. He has also composed the music for several radio and TV commercials and the feature films “Entertaining Mr Sloane” and “The Garnett Saga”.

Since then Georgie has kept incredibly busy working with the likes of Van Morrison, and as a jazz and blues performer he is unmatched. Recent projects have included work with the London Symphony Orchestra and ex-Rolling Stone Bill Wyman, as well as regular work with his two sons (who also perform alongside him in The Blue Flames). And of course, Georgie continues to play the same trademark Hammond A100 Organ he has had since 1966!

THE LADY OF BURMA
Fri 25 Apr 8pm
£12.95 (£10.95)

“She is my pin-up” She inspires me with her gentle determination … Men, armed to the teeth, are running scared of her. She has won, and they know they have lost” Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu on Aung San Suu Kyi.

Following sell out performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and London’s Old Vic, Soho Theatre and most recently Riverside Studios, the inspirational true story of Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi comes to Trinity on Friday 25 April.

Politician, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, mother and grandmother, Aung San Suu Kyi is the leader of the democratically-elected government of Burma, yet has endured house arrest for over a decade. Whatever you know or think about Burmese politics, The Lady of Burma offers an intense and moving insight into the endurance of one woman’s sacrifice and spirited determination in the quest for the freedom of a nation.

Co-director and writer Richard Shannon wrote The Lady of Burma for actress Liana Gould to perform at a fundraising gala for the Burma Campaign UK at the Old Vic in November 2006. The play’s text draws upon a mixture of resources, from Suu Kyi’s own words and interviews Shannon undertook with her close associates in Burma to written material about Burma and Suu Kyi’s history. Co-director Owen Lewis’ credits include Johnson and Boswell: Late but Live by Stewart Lee (Traverse Theatre and forthcoming national tour) and What Would Judas Do and Got To Be Happy (The Bush Theatre).

The play enthralled audiences during Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2007 and a performance at Soho Theatre last October followed as part of an International Day of Action for Burma, just as Suu Kyi’s home nation erupted in protest at the decades of civil rights abuse. A performance recently took place at the House of Commons, and one in planned at the European Parliament in Brussels.
