Visiting Sevenoaks

Sevenoaks is a town situated in the west of Kent, England. It gives its name to the Sevenoaks District, of which it is the principal town, and lies 21.5 miles (34.6 km) southeast of the centre of London.

The presence of Knole House, a large mansion, led to the earlier settlement becoming a village; in the 13th century a market was established here.

Sevenoaks School, one of Britain’s leading independent schools, and is the oldest secular school in England. Sir William Sevenoke, a wealthy London merchant founded it, in 1432.

Two roads, London Road & the High Street divide the centre of town, which meet at the southern end of town at the HSBC Bank. The town has a very good theatre called the Stag. The town contains many fine shops and businesses and is serviced by Sevenoaks District Council, where you will find the staff very friendly and helpful. At the southern end is St Nicholas Church, which is a very fine building.

Sevenoaks became part of the modern communications network when the railway was built. The railway station is situated to the north of London Road where it becomes Tubbs Hill. It has a large commuting population, although a nearby defence installation Fort Halsted, is a large employer of labour.

The town has recently built a very nice shopping area near the site of Blighs, and contains many high quality shops and facilities, it also has a new library and well-maintained leisure centre. The town is well worth visiting.
