Ban Lorries in High Street..Plea

With the ever increasing traffic problems facing our towns and villages, Sevenoaks businessmen and shopkeepers along the main high street are pleading to get a ban on all lorries.

This has come to the fore when a Tudor Grade II  listed building was damaged this week, when two lorries attempted to pass each other in the main upper high street. As the two drivers struggled to control their vehicles, one of them mounted the pavement and hit the wooden eaves of the Tudor building, not only has this caused damage to this very old property, but the owner has now to repair it, which could well exceed £1, 000.

These problems have been highlighted many times when such a dangerous situation like this arises,  there have been a few similar though not so dangerous occurrences in just a few months.

This situation is also very worrying to the many pedestrians using the footpaths alongside the main roads, knowing that these type of massive lorries could well be the cause of a fatal accident or serious injury, as they try to negotiate and manoeuvre along the narrow street.

Such old buildings as this give great character to the town, and many residents are worried that these articulated lorries will create more damage unless something is put into operation, to either ban them, or add a weight restriction to the main high street in Sevenoaks.

Shopkeepers obviously need these massive lorries for their deliveries, but it has now come to the point that there needs to be some serious concern shown, and plans need to be adopted to try and resolve the problems that these articulated lorries are creating.

As propositions are now being put forward in an effort to prevent further accidents, pedestrians can only hope that nothing like this will happen again, and that they can all walk in safety along the busy high street.
