9.30am, where the public can wave Lizzy off, and there will

Lizzy
made history on Saturday 17 February 2018 when she became the
first British athlete to successfully defend a Winter Olympic
title. The Skeleton sensation retained her Olympic Gold at the
Korean Winter Games in Pyeongchang after she won Gold at the
Sochi Winter Olympic Games in 2014.
Lizzy, who grew up in West Kingsdown in the Sevenoaks District,
was the only British athlete at this year’s Winter Olympics
to clinch a gold medal.
Lizzy is a talented all-round athlete who took up the Skeleton
after entering a talent search in 2009. It takes nerves of steel
to take part in this sport, as competitors slide down a frozen
track, lying face down on a sled, reaching speeds in excess
of 90 miles an hour, with no brakes!
When Lizzy first took up the Skeleton, the Sevenoaks District
Sport Council, funded by Sevenoaks District Council, awarded
her a grant to help with the transition to the new sport.
District Olympian, Lizzy Yarnold, says: “It still hasn’t
really sunk in that I am now a Double Olympic Champion! The
last four years has been tough and at times I wasn’t sure
if I would be able to defend my title, but it just shows if
you dream big and work hard then who knows what you can achieve.
Thanks to everyone in the Sevenoaks District for all their support.
I can’t wait to come and visit and show as many young
people as possible my two Olympic Gold Medals - dreams can come
true!”
Cllr Peter
Fleming, Leader of the Council, adds: “Lizzy’s hard
work, drive and sacrifice to become an Olympic champion is an
inspiration to us all. I am delighted that we were able to help
her early on in her career through our funding of the Sevenoaks
District Sports Council. I am deeply honoured that she has agreed
to once again tour the Sevenoaks District where she grew up
and spend time inspiring the next generation.”
The
route and timings are as follows
•

towards Trinity School via Pembroke Road, the A225 (past the
Vine), then right at Bat and Ball Junction and onto Seal Road
then right again onto Seal Hollow Road

Come
and Take the Plunge for Charity |
Fearless
charity supporters have trunks and swimsuits at the ready as Sevenoaks
District Council Chairman, Cllr Larry Abraham, opens the un-brrr-lievable
Chilli Dip on 17 February.
Organised by Ellenor, who support families facing terminal illness,
the event sees brave fundraisers jump into the ice-cold swimming
pool of St Julian’s Club, Sevenoaks, all in the name of
charity before being rewarded with a warm bowl of chilli afterwards
to thaw them out.
The event starts at 11am and welcomes anyone aged 16 and over,
costing £15 with all the funds going to the Ellenor charity,
who serve the West Kent community. |
Before
taking the leap of faith, everyone will receive full training
and a safety walk.
Sevenoaks District Council Chairman, Cllr Larry Abraham, says:
“The Chilli Dip is one of the more daring fundraising events
out there and my most unusual engagement of my year as Chairman!
So if you think you’re up to the challenge, sign up now
before spaces run out. “Ellenor is a charity very close
to my heart, with the Chilli Dip raising thousands over the years,
so it would be great to make 2018 the biggest year yet.”

People
looking to add another string to their bow have the chance to
join an eight-week archery course.
Sevenoaks District Council is organising an archery course to
take place from Thursday 14 April which is open to everyone aged
between 11 and 25 years old. |
The
‘inclusive archery’ course, which has been organised
in association with lottery funded Sportivate and is supported
by Kent Sport and Sport England, is also open to people who may
have previously played archery or who have never picked up a bow
and arrow before.
Leisure Cabinet Member, Cllr Michelle Lowe, says: “This
course is open to everyone and has been organised as a way of
not only encouraging people to try out something new, but for
people who may have tried it before and are looking for something
sociable as well as a physical activity which will help to keep
them fit.”
The course will cost £2.50 per session and will take place
between 5.30pm and 6.30pm at Knole Academy, Bradbourne Vale Road,
Sevenoaks, Kent, TN13 3LE. |
Youngsters
in Dunton Green also have the chance to try their hand at archery
by booking onto a free four-day archery course which will take
place between Tuesday 31 May and Friday 3 June. There will be
two courses taking place simultaneously between 10am and 11am
and then between 11am and 12pm.

Assist Chairman in Celebrating Commonwealth Day with Flag Raising
|
Westerham Sea Cadets will be leading
the way for a special flag raising ceremony at Sevenoaks District
Council early this month. The event is being held from 9.45am
to celebrate Commonwealth Day, which takes place on Monday 14
March with Council Chairman Cllr Philip McGarvey leading the
event outside the Council’s Sevenoaks offices in Argyle
Road.
Local veterans and Councillors will also
attend the event and there will be readings from the Chairman,
Sevenoaks District Council Leader, Cllr Fleming, and prayers
from Reverend Dorothy McGarvey, who curates for Farningham,
Eynsford and Lullingstone. Year three pupils from St John’s
Church of England Primary School in Sevenoaks will also attend.
Sevenoaks District Council Chairman,
Cllr Philip McGarvey says: “I am honoured to be a part
of leading this nationally recognised celebration. It’s
a chance for us to show our support for the Commonwealth and
the appreciation of the values it stands for and opportunities
offered to its citizens.”
The theme of this year’s Commonwealth
Day is ‘An Inclusive Commonwealth’. The day is an
annual celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations and marked
by a multi-faith service usually attended by Queen Elizabeth
II as Head of the Commonwealth.
From 10.30am on the same day veterans
will also gather to commemorate World War 1. From this time
people will move into the Council offices where the Chairman
will light and then extinguish four candles.
This ceremony is based on the feeling
of darkness which came over Europe 100 years ago and uses light
as a symbol of hope.

or to invite him to an event, visit http://www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/chairman

Council
Urges Sevenoaks District Residents to Make Sure They are Registered
to Vote |
Sevenoaks
District Council is urging residents not yet registered to vote
to take advantage of the National Voter Registration Drive by
going online and registering their details.
On Thursday
5 May voters across the county will be able to go to the polls
to elect a Police and Crime Commissioner for Kent. There could
also be an ‘in, out’ referendum on the European
Union later this year.
But residents
not registered to vote will not be able to exercise their right
to have their say.
Elections
Portfolio Holder, Cllr Anna Firth, said: “Anyone not yet
registered to vote should do so as soon as possible. Not only
do we have the Police and Crime Commissioner for Kent this year
but there may also be a once in a lifetime opportunity to have
your say on the EU.
"I’d
urge people living across the District to use the National Voter
Registration Drive to spread the message amongst family and
friends: save time, register online today! It only takes a few
minutes to register to vote online and avoids all the faff of
filling in forms.”
The deadline
for registering to vote in time for the Police and Crime Commissioner
election is Monday 18 April and while there is still time, it’s
running out quickly.
Residents can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
They can also call the Council on 01732 227000 to ask for an
elector registration form to be sent to them.
