D-Day was imminent
Sir Winston Churchill
Sir Winston Churchill
D-Day was imminent and Churchill had told the agents of S.O.E. "To Set Europe Ablaze" Words not to be taken lightly by the highly trained and dedicated agents of the S.O.E.

The agents of the S.O.E. were sometimes taken across the channel by fishing boat or by submarine, most were parachuted into occupied Europe, or flown in and dropped off by small Lysander aircraft, that landed on secret landing strips, generally when the weather was clear and the moon bright enough. Whatever the means of transport used, every mission was fraught with danger, not only from German night fighters, and enemy flak batteries, but also from the very real fear that the Gestapo could possibly be waiting.

The Lysander
Pilots had the very dangerous task of
flying and landing the agents in occupied France.

George Millar and many other agents of the S.O.E. including many women had been parachuted into enemy occupi
ed France well before D-Day, they had joined the thousands hidden away in the secret camps scattered throughout the forests of France, and had the responsibility of training these dedicated and enthusiastic recruits in the use of weapons and explosives.
