Retiring President Brian Tutt achieved his main goal in office last week when he presented a cheque for £2,350 to Peter and Kathy Howe, to be used in support of their efforts to provide a Health Centre for the village of Bakindik in The Gambia.

Herne Bay Rotary Club

Herne Bay Rotary Club

The Herne Bay Rotary Club is dedicated to helping people in the local area and beyond. The club is involved in community events in the Herne Bay area throughout the year. Meeting regularly the Herne Bay rotary club plays an important role in Herne Bay life.

We were founded in 1948 and we currently have 38 members. We meet weekly on Wednesdays for lunch at The Huntsman and Horn Inn Margate Road, Broomfield, CT6 7AF and often are entertained by a visiting speaker.

Our motto is "Service above Self" and we support the local community through sponsorship and funding, currently concentrating on deserving causes and in particular on Youth- eg schools and youth/sports clubs.

We are in District 1120 (a part of Rotary International) and support the Rotary Foundation for International Causes. Our largest recent International effort was for the Tsunami Relief, when we were instrumental in raising over $30,000 for an Orphanage in Sri Lanka.

Perhaps our most visible sign in Herne Bay is the Telly-Go-Round on the Sea-front, which for over 25 years has entertained children and visitors during the summer, and has raised many thousands of pounds for the local community.

Our major fundraising events during the year are a Golf Day in June and a Concert in the King's Hall in November.

We maintain links with Contact Clubs in France, Holland and Germany, meeting annually, and 2009 is our turn to host this event. This year's President is Brian Tutt.
