Having lived in the area all his life, even attending the local boys grammar school, Paul Clarke has always had ties to the area. Since his time at the former Gillingham Grammar school, Clarke completed a diploma in management studies at the university of Derby. This qualification set him up for a life in politics! Following this, Clarke was elected as MP for Gillingham in 1997. Since the election he has held the position of member of deputy leaders team, assistant government whip and member of backbench committees for home affairs, transport, education and employment.
